And the Winner is........

I thought having a giveaway on my Facebook page would be easy, boy, was I wrong! All I wanted to do was reward my existing fans for noticing me, simple right?

It seems there are strict rules for having a giveaway or promotion on Facebook. You must use a third party app to host a promotion. The problem is, those third party apps know you need them, so the prices are steep. Many people avoid all this by simply hosting the giveaway on their blog. I didn't want to require my fans to jump through any hoops for a reward. I researched all the various ways to host a simple giveaway; polls, sweeps, etc. without risking my Facebook status. Facebook prohibits you from requiring a "click" for a giveaway. The only way it seemed possible to pull this off was to print out a list of my current fans, put the names in a hat, and draw a winner.

So, as primitive as it seems, that's what I did. I made a custom pearl necklace for the drawing, and names in hat, headed out this morning to have a neutral person at my local bead store draw the winners' name. Joy, of Western Traders selected the name for me. I couldn't wait to get home and post the winner!

I mistakenly thought I would simply contact the winner and let them know how to claim their prize. I was horrified to find there is no way to contact a fan! Fortunately, the winner posted on my page, and I was able to get a shipping address, but not before I had announced another name. I will honor the second name drawn by shipping a second prize.

So, I've had my first giveaway, as clumsy as it was. Hopefully, it will go more smoothly next time. And, there WILL be a next time! I had a lot of fun with this, and plan to have many more giveaways :)

  2. Wow! I did not know FB had restrictions on giveaways. I glad it ended well, though, and am sure the fact that you were able to give someone such a lovely prize made it all worth it. :)

    1. It was worth it, Babs. Honestly, it was just as exciting as receiving a sale. And yes, the restrictions regarding promotions are very strict on Facebook. I had no idea before I started the process. Facebook will shut down pages that violate the rules.

  3. There is always a 'CATCH" SOMEWHERE and it means pay
    and pay...
I am glad everything when well :O)

  4. I did the same thing, and then I've heard you're not supposed to do that. Rather than putting names in a hat, I copied and pasted all the names into an excel spreadsheet and then used an online random number generator to choose the line # of the winner.
